A larger urban plot was divided into two parcels and now hosts two neighboring custom homes for two sisters and their families with similar programs emphasizing aging-in-place.  

Decidedly rooted in the Pacific Northwest Modern style, the homes use simple shifting masses and pair shed and flat roofs to respond to the sloping site. Spaces and glazing are strategically located to provide passive solar access, frame exterior views, and privacy from neighboring properties. Exterior materials feature painted lap siding in a couple different textures, natural wood cladding, board formed concrete, metal clad windows, and metal roofs. Creating similar external shapes with different materials gives the effect of a ‘different but together’ visual that is emblematic of the relationship between these two families.

The interiors of each home decidely diverge expressing each couples' individualistic taste. In celebration of Pacific Northwest Modernism, J+N embraced natural wood and warm, organic colors throughout their home. The interiors of J+N's makes liberal use of wood fittings: Douglas fir casework, window frames, doors, and trim, cedar clad ceilings, & Oregon white oak flooring. On the other hand, A+A wanted a clean, bright, minimal palette with pops of color featuring their colorful tile selections, artwork, and furniture.

Both homes have been readied for aging in place equipped with framing for future elevator shafts, blocking for grab bars and other mobility aids, and lever door handles that only require a one-quarter turn for accessibility. Zero-barrier showers, generous hallways and doorframes, and main floors that can transition to future single-level living allow the couples to age in place gracefully. The lower levels offer potential for a separate apartment on the ground floor to house live-in help if ever needed.
